June 2025

Many visitors to Oregon’s marine reserves interact only with the surface, unaware of the critical species, habitats, and conservation efforts below.

We were tasked with creating an experience that:

  • Delivered on-site education

  • Engaged audiences ranging from school groups to casual beachgoers

  • Used immersive storytelling to foster emotional connection to marine life

The Challenge

As the student creative director, I:

Led the project’s visual direction and storytelling arc.

Collaborated with graduate and doctoral students across design, developers, and research.

Developed the project’s promotional strategy, including signage, outreach, and award submissions.

Patch-style logo designed to align with the Oregon Marine Reserves system while branding the Otter Rock AR experience as a distinct, place-based activation.

Visitors at Otter Rock scan a QR code to launch Beneath the Surface, an immersive AR lens built in Snapchat Lens Studio. Designed for both mobile WebAR and Spectacles, the experience reveals animated marine species like kelp forests, sea stars, and harbor seals, layered directly over the real-world coastline.

Key Features:

  • Cross-platform activation via mobile and Spectacles

  • Site-specific marine animations with tap-to-learn interaction

  • Experience tailored to Otter Rock’s ecosystem and audience
